Recognition of Work Well Done

As the Kamp came to a close on Day 2, students were awarded Kurzweil Kamp Certificates of Completion. These certificates recognized the students hard work and attention throughout the two days. Proudly showing off their certificates are (left to right) Simone, Chance, and Harmony. Well done, you three!

Putting Our Kurzweil Knowledge to the Test

At the end of Day 2, the students took on the adult helpers in a rousing game of Kurzweil Jeopardy. Lining up on both sides of the room, the group faced off. Early in the game, the adults attempted to gain control by choosing the more challenging 50 point questions. This strategy was successful for the short term, but after stealing some points, the students surged ahead and it soon became clear that they were the ones in control.

During the final Jeopardy game, students looked to each other for answers. After a few minutes of collaborating, they had to give one group answer. After a few rounds, the students learned that the quiet members of the group often had the correct answer right away!

Despite the adult helpers keen concentration, the students worked together to answer more questions correctly and came out, in the end, victorious. The adult helpers were very gracious, noting that the students really did know the program inside and out – some even knew the answers for both the Macintosh and Windows versions!

During the Kurzweil Kamp, students worked closely with their adult helpers to learn how to use Kurzweil 3000 to help them with reading and writing. Here, at the Chilliwack Kamp, Alexis and her helper, Mr. Braun, explore the features of version 4 for the Macintosh.

Chilliwack Kampers Alex and Ms. Johnston, watch the Kurzweil 3000 Windows demonstration on how to navigate multi-page documents. Alex, a fan of computer games, had no trouble picking up tips on using Kurzweil 3000 to scan print materials.

Kurzweil 3000 can be used to support students throughout their school career. At the Chilliwack Kurzweil Kamp, James, a secondary school student, worked with his helper Mr. Franson, on finding ways he could use the program in different subject areas.

Students Test the Adults

Equality for all! Kurzweil Kamp students took charge when it was their turn to test the adults on the material covered on day one.

Voice Annotations

Phillip and Ben are working on voice annotations. Ben did some great troubleshooting when his Mac initially had problems recording his voice.

Simone Scans

Jeopardy

The class ended with a heated game of Jeopardy. The students earned an easy victory over the adults, with a score of 390 to 270. When Walter knew what OCR meant (Optical Character Recognition), we knew the students were in a prime position to WIN!

The students collaborated to answer all but one question correctly – they certainly know Kurzweil 3000 inside and out!

Power Projects – Using all the tools

Towards the latter part of Day 2, students worked on their POWER PROJECT – a chance to bring everything they had learned over the last two days together.

Amrinder (above) is finishing his assignment. He was on his last question which required him to make Voice Notes – not the easiest task – so he didn’t mind being interrupted with an interview.

Q: I know you are an Advanced Kurzweil user, so did you learn anything new today?
A: Yes, I learned about Extracting Highlights.

Q: What are Extracting Highlights?
A: You can extract all of the highlights you have in a file and collect them in a new file. You can use this new file as a study sheet.

Q: Is this useful for you?
A: Yes, I can see this being useful for Science and Socials, where I have to memorize important facts.

Dino and Conner’s Demonstration

Dino and Conner created a video demonstration on how to copy text from the Internet and convert them to audio files. They were eager to talk about the experience.

Conner made this comment: “We had a great time. I wanna do it again.”

Q: Does giving a demonstration help you learn the software better?
A: YES!

Q: So how many takes did you need to make?
A: 2 or 3, but the computer had problems. That’s why we had to do it a few times. Then the camera person had to stop and redo certain parts.

Q: Other than the computer problems, did you work well in front of the camera?
A: (emphatically) YES!
