About

Kurzweil 3000 Kamp

Students from schools in the lower mainland met in April 2008 at the SET-BC Provincial Centre for a two day “camp”.  The students were accompanied by adult helpers – primarily teachers and special education assistants – spending the two days focusing on developing skills for independently using Kurzweil 3000.  Activities included using the program to read text aloud, adjusting the reading features, scanning print material and books, adding and extracting highlights and annotations, and adding bubble note questions.  In addition to these hands on practice activities, students worked in pairs to create a demonstration on an aspect of the program of their choice.  They had only a few minutes to practice before recording their demonstrations!  At the end of the camp, the students tested their new knowledge of Kurzweil 3000 in a game of Jeopardy.

The Kurzweil 3000 Kamp offered the students a great opportunity to meet other students who use the program and the adult helpers were encouraged to think of ways to support students who are using the software in their educational programs.  Snack breaks and lunch walks along the river helped keep the camp atmosphere going during the two days.  Many people were involved in supporting this event, including the school teams who sent the students and SET-BC staff who supported the various camp activities. Thanks to everyone!

Two other camps are scheduled for May and June 2008.  If you would like more information on these events or would like suggestions for hosting your own, please contact Kerry Randle (krandle@setbc.org)
